Conservative responses to the limited release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the redaction procedure.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions raise serious questions about the information may be concealed beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for greater transparency.
“The public are raging and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the law, and suggested that a future legislature may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously fails to adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing In Support of the Disclosure
However, a segment of rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in photographs have their identities blacked out.
But a few are not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed some conservative figures to go on the offensive.
“This is pretty rich how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of no criminal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding these files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Muted
However, broader comment on the political right was relatively muted after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud demands for action that preceded the legislative vote to pass a bill mandating the documents' publication.
The commentator, who recently accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were provided physical binders of files that included little new information.
