{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters dangerous incident with Formula 1 track officials
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson revealed he narrowly avoided a potentially fatal accident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when a pair of track officials crossed the track immediately ahead of his car
The concerning event took place on the third circuit when safety workers were seen on the circuit as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to replace his compromised front wing
Competitor's Live Reaction
Shortly afterward, Racing Bulls driver Lawson spoke to his pit wall engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you just see that? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was witnessing"
"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I arrived at Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two individuals dashing across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, frankly, it was extremely hazardous"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Evidently there's been a miscommunication somewhere but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a live track marshals can be authorized to just run across the track in such a way. I don't understand the reason, I'm certain we'll get some kind of clarification, but it really can't happen again"
Governing Body Reviewing
F1's overseeing organization, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is actively examining the events
"After an occurrence at turn one, race control was advised that debris was present on the track at the turning point of that curve" stated the governing body
"On lap three, track officials were notified and put on alert to enter the track and clear the fragments once every vehicle had gone by"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had entered the pits, the directives to deploy marshals were withdrawn and a double yellow flag was raised in that area"
"Our inquiry continues what happened subsequent to that time"
