Teenager Found Dead Following False Accusations of Taking Ashes
A teenage boy was discovered deceased only a few days after being falsely accused of stealing the ashes of a dead infant during a burglary, a coroner's inquiry has heard.
Heartbreaking Discovery
Kai Lloyd's parents found his body in his bedroom at his Flintshire residence on November 19th, 2021.
Untrue Accusations Start
The investigation heard how his mother got a message on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a individual inquiring if her son was her offspring. The message added: "Inform him thanks for burgling my apartment."
In a testimony presented to the proceedings, the mother said the individual had been in the news, claiming her infant's ashes had been stolen in a burglary - a allegation which was false.
Law Enforcement Investigation
An official inquiry from police later concluded the supposed burglary complainant had "lied to police" and "it now appears that the property was not taken in the beginning".
Media reports about the supposed taken ashes attracted social media comments, and although the teenager was not identified in the posts, his parent said individuals "knew it was him".
The "online posts were extremely upsetting", she stated.
Mental Wellbeing Impact
She added that Kai had been identified with mild ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other individuals' views genuinely were important to him.
"This must have hurt him deeply," she commented, "particularly when this was untrue".
Kai was arrested at home, but no evidence was discovered. He was transported to a police station and later released under investigation.
Authorities said they would be in touch, the hearing heard, but had not reached out to the family by the moment of his passing.
Isolation and Worry
His mother said her son "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like much longer".
When she talked to him about the supposed incident, she said her child told her he had gone into the house because the woman who lived there had said he could utilize the toilet whenever he needed, but refuted removing anything.
Digital Harassment
In a joint statement between her and her spouse, the mother said her child was being bullied online after the accusations.
The proceedings heard that a young adult encouraged Kai to end his life.
She had no concerns on the evening before he died, explaining how she had heard him "chuckling and joking".
She described him as a "compassionate, loving" young man, and said her "relatives is totally devastated".
He had been "clearly hiding his concerns", she stated, adding that he could not bear to have anyone "have negative thoughts of him".
School Reaction
The inquest received testimony from educational personnel at Connah's Quay High School.
On 8 November, she "heard some students discussing that Kai had been detained and that was the first I heard".
"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.
After the discussion, the educator said she rang the family's parents' landline and left a message saying she had spoken to the student about the accusations.
The court learned his parents said they never receive that message.
Formal Finding
Senior coroner told the hearing he would await reports regarding what improvements had been made to handling individuals with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a prevention of subsequent deaths report.
Delivering a descriptive conclusion, he stated: "Around November 8th, 2021, unsupported accusations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a 14-year-old child.
"Probably untruths were subsequently exaggerated and amplified through the platform of online networks.
"On November 11th, he was questioned by the authorities and after his questioning he was released whilst investigations continued."
The coroner concluded: "There is no evidence that the actions or failures of any organization caused or contributed to his death and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted action it is impossible to determine his intent."
