This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like typical biological terror, but inside Together resides a deep examination about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
